The best background-text is made possible with SVG. It is cross-brwoser compatible.
The trick here is to make a HTML box with our background image (it’s the <svg> element itself). Inside we put a rectangle with the same background as your webpage (the non-transparent color) and we apply a “transparency-mask” on the text. The result is that the text looks like pushing through the non-transparent box, and revealing the background-image we want to.

We have to do so because otherwise the background image can not behave as if it is “fixed”.

In the SVG code, we put the text (of course) and we define a name for our background (this is done in the SVG rather than the CSS, and it’s the only way to put the background on text here)

SVG is still XML data, so you can still use CSS on each element, like text-shadow (but take care of the mask effect, colors are masked too…):
